About the event
The idea for the Primrose was created by Captain John W. Melvin, Sr., one of Destin’s local fisherman. His many year of fishing experience led Captain Melvin to know exactly what a good fishing boat needed. He just needed some one to build it.
In 1922, when John George Maltezo moved to Destin, he was approached by Captain Melvin. John George was a capable builder but unfamiliar with how to construct a craft exactly like the Primrose. They worked as a team for many days, and every detail of the Primrose’s 36 foot length and 7 foot 6 inch beam was drawn to scale by Maltezo before the first piece of juniper was cut.
When the construction was completed in 1925, she was fitted with a thirty HP Palmer Marine engine. Primrose is the last seine boat built in Destin, but the first of its kind to have an engine…
